‘Refund to Savings’ tax-time experiment boosts savings

Last year, almost 900,000 low- and moderate-income tax filers participated in a unique tax preparation savings intervention program, depositing about $5.9 million more into savings accounts than they would have otherwise. As the 2014 tax season opens, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, PhD, of the Center for Social Development, says the results are promising.

‘In the Aftermath of Trauma: Contemporary Video Installations’ opens today at the Kemper

The history of the 20th century and the beginnings of the 21st have been scarred by incomprehensible violence and far-reaching political events. This spring, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum explores both the direct experience and lingering effects of historic upheavals with “In the Aftermath of Trauma: Contemporary Video Installations.”

School and hospital team to help create national pediatric research network

The School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are part of a new multi-institutional project that aims to create a national pediatric “learning health system” that will feature an extensive clinical data research network. Feliciano “Pele” Yu Jr., MD, is the project’s principal investigator on the Washington University Medical Campus.

Strassmann installed as Charles Rebstock Professor of Biology

Biologist Joan E. Strassmann, PhD, was installed Jan. 23 as the Charles Rebstock Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences in a ceremony in Holmes Lounge. The professorship was previously held by Alan Templeton, PhD. Fittingly, Strassmann was his first PhD student.
